Garden and Pool in Tossa de Mar

In an exquisite enclave on the outskirts of the town of Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava, we were called to re-envision the garden of a small and isolated house sitting on the top of a hill and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding nature.

The project did not involve changes to the house itself but required a complete re-vamp of the garden which was dilapidated and uninviting. The pool had not been used for many years and the base required reparation. Virtually nothing remained of what had been small paved areas and the connection between the house, garden and pool was non-existent.

The primary objective was to connect the house with the surrounding nature and incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea, creating different functional spaces at different levels to bridge the existing gap. Three terraces were created at different levels connected with stone-paved steps and the slopes were connected with planters with water wise plants that require little maintenance. The first terrace is a circulation area that connects the entire perimeter of the house, the second an outdoor dining area with a pergola and the third the pool area.

The pool needed a complete renovation. The base had innumerable cracks and it´s tiles was practically non-existent. The base was repaired, an overflow was added to create an infinity pool edge and the perimeter was created with limestone from the area.

For the client, it was very important to have a direct view of the sea from each of the different zones, that materials and tonalities of the area be used and that all existing larger trees be conserved. The proposal is respectful of context and successfully connects the house and garden with the infinity of the Mediterranean.
