ZEST Architecture is nominated for the 10th Edition of the Sustainable Construction Awards of Castilla y León 2023-2024
ZEST Architecture has been nominated for the prestigious national Sustainable Construction Awards of Castilla y León 2023-2024. After a rigorous judging process, ZEST Architecture’s Rammed Earth House is one of only 3 projects shortlisted in the Sustainable Building Category, out of thousands of studios who entered. We are so proud to be a finalist!
What are the Sustainable Construction Awards of Castilla y León?
The Castilla y León Sustainable Construction Awards are a benchmark for sustainable and innovative construction at the regional and national level. They award projects that are innovative and demonstrate a contribution to the implementation of life cycle approaches and the decarbonisation process. The awards recognize studios and projects that set a benchmark for sustainable building practice. This can be in all typologies and includes training, industry, urban planning, infrastructure, housing and construction.
Our Rammed Earth House features in the Sustainable Building category. This category aims to showcase the best projects, in either new construction or renovation, that offer excellent environmental performance. Unlike other awards that merely require photos and text, here we had to justify the project with extensive technical documentation. We had to submit photos showing the entire construction process, license documentation, a detailed sustainability report and a precise calculation of the CO2 footprint, both for the construction and for the life cycle of the building. In other words, we had a huge task of proving that our building is carbon neutral and built sustainably. Below is a list of important sustainable criteria the award looks at:
- Solar orientation of the building and passive design strategies
- Energy consumption
- Carbon footprint
- Quality of the indoor environment, health and well-being for the occupants
- Treatment of natural resources and contribution to a circular economy (life cycle of materials)
- Social and economic factors
- Quality of innovative design strategies
- Capacity for adaptation and resilience
